Quality Assurance Directorate Orients Year One Class Representatives on Leadership and Campus Life

Makerere University’s Directorate of Quality Assurance held an orientation session for newly elected Year One Class Representatives on August 29th, 2025, at the Telepresence Centre.

Leadership Qualities and Responsibilities

The Chairperson of MUACR opened the session by congratulating the representatives and outlining essential leadership qualities including good communication skills, respectfulness, organization, punctuality, approachability, empathy, reliability, and commitment to servant leadership. He emphasized their core roles in problem-solving, communication, and representing student views

Safeguarding and Student Welfare

The Safeguarding Liaison Officer briefed attendees on the university’s safeguarding policy, defining it as “keeping stakeholders free from harm, neglect and abuse.” Representatives were instructed to report incidents promptly through various channels including the MAK safe space (safespace@mak.ac.ug) and the safeguarding liaison officer (0709 1908171)

Campus Life Mentorship

A fresh graduate provided practical guidance on navigating university life, covering spiritual development, social relationships, mental health, academic excellence, and personal relationships. Key advice included building social capital wisely, prioritizing mental wellness, and understanding that “academics go beyond grades.”

Support Services and Quality Assurance

The Manager of Support Services outlined numerous available services including academic advising, counselling, disability support, and health services. Class representatives were identified as crucial bridges between students and the Quality Assurance Directorate, tasked with providing feedback on curriculum and teaching methods.

Commitment to Student Success

In his closing remarks, Director Dr. Cyprian Misinde emphasized the directorate’s commitment to student satisfaction.

“The Directorate’s ultimate mandate is to ensure student satisfaction,”

Dr. Misinde stated, reminding representatives that their “primary obligation is to study” while balancing their leadership responsibilities.

The orientation equipped the new representatives with essential knowledge and tools to effectively serve their fellow students while maintaining academic excellence.
