Makerere University, founded in 1922, has grown into Uganda’s leading higher education institution, renowned across Africa. Our strategic vision positions us as a thought leader in knowledge generation for societal transformation and development. Our mission is to provide transformative, innovative teaching, learning, research, and services responsive to dynamic national and global needs, ensuring adaptability and impact.
Quality assurance is the foundation of our success. Its purpose centres on three pillars. First, it ensures standards are adhered to in all processes, aligning with national bodies like the National Council for Higher Education and international practices for integrity and consistency. Second, it enhances efficiency, promoting value for money and accountability. By optimising operations and using data-driven decisions, we maximise resource impact through audits and feedback. Third, it guarantees graduates are fit for purpose, equipped with skills, ethics, and innovation to meet professional and societal demands via outcome-based education.
To achieve these, Makerere is committed to a formal, integrated Quality Assurance Management System (QAMS), including subsystems to enforce policies: Academic Management Information System (ACMIS) for students records and grading; E-HRMS for staff management; Research Management Information Systems for proposals and ethics; Self-Assessment System for evaluations; Students Attendance Monitoring System (SAMS) for participation tracking; Automated Curriculum Management System for programme updates; Procurement System for transparent dealings; Estates and Works Management System for infrastructure; Finance Management System (FMS) for budgeting and reporting and Grants Management system. These interconnected subsystems create a seamless ecosystem for real-time monitoring.
Makerere has comprehensive policies guiding operations. QAD develops Key Performance Quality Indicators (KPQIs) based on these, covering governance (leadership and compliance); teaching and learning (curriculum and outcomes); research and innovation (publications and impact); finance (budget and audits); procurement and planning (efficiency and risks); administration (workflows and services); human resources (satisfaction and diversity); student affairs (welfare and feedback).
Through KPQIs, we promote evidence-based improvement, collaborating via workshops and audits.
